Encouraging exploration and dialogue in the visual arts

Consider a painting, not in 1000 words, but in a few

Kathryn Olsen painting

A Certain Dance

"My artwork reflects aspects of my inner self - especially issues that I'm currently struggling with - conflicts that I'm experiencing, difficult and/or ambivalent emotions.  I like to use forms that I find in the natural world and I draw or paint them initially without thought or planning just to see what arises.  When my intention becomes clear to me, I work on the final piece."

Costello di Gaiche, Umbria       3-20-09
I woke to dovesong
Warm in the morning crispness of the castle.
Flashes of birdflight broke the sun through the window.
Wooden beams overhead have become iron
Forged by eight centuries.
Sleeping purrs nearby of people I love.
Soon we start the day
And I become Italian, Umbrian, Etruscan
-part of the white woman of the castle
-part of the thirty generations who walked here.
I hope they cried for the beauty of the land
And felt such joy.

I begin the adventure of ending
Grateful for awakening experiences
Grateful for love and loving
Content to join the walk of those before.

"On a recent trip to Italy I was able to spend a few nights in an old castle from the 1200s in Umbria. As I thought about all those who had lived in those thick walls and walked on the stones, I had a sense of the shortness of my time here in relation to the timeline of man. There was also a timeless quality to the landscapes, the old houses, and the pure simple food, fresh from the gardens. In the three paintings of Italy I was trying to preserve that sensation of being attached to all those previous generations in a place where one feels the past mingling with the present."

Susan Fronapfel painting

Transition

"Between perfect shadow and full light is penumbra, where certainty wavers and possibility intrigues.  This between space is where I find myself painting."

"The two paintings, Penumbra and Transition, consider different seasons and inevitable change."
